The Cups Estate
A remarkable story of place often starts with the meaning behind a name. The Cups Estate vineyard gets its name from the landscape, which the pioneering McCrae family dubbed ‘The Cups’ in the early 1830s due to its rolling sand dunes. This striking topography, combined with the site’s location between the sheltered Port Phillip and the wild wind of Bass Strait, contributes to its singular terroir. The vineyard sits on sandy loam soil over limestone reefs, which produces wines that are both delicate and aromatic with a unique minerality.
The Cups Estate, established in 1999 by Joe and Carmen Fisicaro, is a 12ha vineyard nestled on the Mornington Peninsula a stone’s throw from its famous hot springs. The estate, now in its second generation, offers the perfect blend of wine, food, scenic views and welcoming service. Guests can enjoy the tranquil views over the olive grove and vineyard while enjoying tastings at the cellar door or dining at the restaurant.
The Peninsula’s cool climate is ideal for growing pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot gris grapes, which form the backbone of The Cups Estate's offerings. Its winemaking philosophy emphasises the unique characteristics of each grape variety while also capturing the maritime influence and distinctive terroir of The Cups. Under the expertise of long-term viticulturist Greg Thomson, the estate practises sustainable and hands-on viticulture, ensuring the highest quality fruit for its 100 per cent estate-grown, single-vineyard wines.
Since its first vintage in 2003, The Cups Estate has produced several award-winning wines that have gained high acclaim for their delicate flavours and balance. The range now includes cuvee, pinot gris, chardonnay, rosé, pinot noir, shiraz and sparkling shiraz.
The Cups Estate’s restaurant offers a contemporary set menu using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients creatively crafted by talented head chef Nick Bladin. As is the case with the wines, the menu is inspired by its coastal location, with ingredients and flavours that highlight the Peninsula. The ever-changing chef’s menu is designed to be shared and pairs perfectly with the estate wines.
When dining at the restaurant, expect to be taken on a food and wine journey. You will be welcomed to the table with a daily baked bread to dip into the estate-grown extra virgin olive oil, which is also available to take home. Next, a variety of handcrafted snacks initiate the tasting experience. The shared courses will typically consist of a homemade pasta dish followed by a local seafood dish and meat course to finish. Optional sides and dessert will complete the experience.
Expect a variety of interesting ingredients and flavours delivered in a refined and considered manner that showcases the very best local produce.
The Cups Estate is dedicated to creating food and wine that reflect the essence of the surrounding land while providing a memorable experience for every visitor. Whether you are tasting wine, enjoying a meal or simply taking in the surroundings, you’re sure to leave with fond memories. Cheers to a wonderful time.
