This stunning property, a cherished part of the Mornington Peninsula for more than 150 years, is now home to The Diggers Club. Perched on the picturesque slopes of Dromana, this historical neo-Gothic estate offers panoramic views of the bay and the surrounding hills. The home was designed and built in 1871 by Edward La Trobe Bateman, an artist, landscape gardener and architect who envisaged creating a retreat like no other in the region.

Today, Bateman’s vision continues to thrive, now a world-class garden on the edge of the bay. Each season brings fresh inspiration to its grounds, which serve as a living catalogue of a vast variety of fruits, vegetables and other botanical marvels. The garden is further enhanced by the presence of vibrant birdlife, contributing to the overall atmosphere of serenity and beauty.

Among the highlights is the vibrant Colour Wheel, which showcases an array of flowers and foliage organised by hue. Each season brings new surprises, from the vibrant blooms of perennials to the bountiful citrus gardens. The rose arbour, Mediterranean garden, vegetable parterre and children’s garden are particularly popular. Heronswood’s gardeners are passionate about their work, tending the 1.6ha property with care. They recycle all organic matter, collect seeds for future planting, and cultivate plants in the hothouse before transferring them to the garden or selling them at the on-site shop.

Gallery Heronswood offers an educational experience, with displays and audiovisual presentations that provide insights into the history of the site, the significance of heirloom seeds, and the preservation of sustainable gardening practices. The garden shop, a favourite among locals and visitors, showcases a large wall of heirloom seeds, along with a wide selection of edible plants, flowers, propagation essentials and colourful books that will inspire gardeners of all levels.

After exploring the gardens, visitors can unwind at Heronswood House, enjoying local produce and freshly baked cakes over a cup of tea. With views overlooking the lush gardens and the bay, it’s the perfect place to relax. For a more casual experience, visitors are welcome to bring a picnic rug and enjoy lunch on one of the many scenic lawns.

The mission of The Diggers Club, Australia’s largest gardening community, is to preserve heirloom seeds for future generations. Garden entry is $15 but is redeemable with an annual Diggers membership, which costs $49. Membership grants unlimited access to Heronswood, The Garden of St Erth in Blackwood, Cloudehill in Olinda, and the Diggers Garden Shop in Adelaide.
